The city of Yakutsk in Siberia is currently breaking cold records: after passing the -50°C mark a few days ago, the thermometer there now shows… -62.7°C. A severe cold that the city has not known for twenty years. January is always the coldest month of the year in Lakutsk, but the average temperature rarely drops below -40°C, even at this time. Therefore, the current temperatures are unusual, but they coincide with a cold snap affecting most parts of Siberia.

Yakutsk residents are used to harsh winters, but this winter is harsh, even for them. This cold can be dangerous, especially because of the risk of frostbite. Right now, the entire city is shrouded in an “icy haze,” according to Northeastern Yakutsk Federal University, whose observations were cited by CNN.

This happens when “the air is so cold that warm air from homes, people, and cars can’t rise,” the foundation explains.

If new students are not advised to “go out into the streets in winter when the temperature drops below -40 degrees Celsius,” other residents are obliged to continue living as normally as possible.
