Linking to ‘The Lord of the Rings’: Why the Elendil sword is so important in ‘The Rings of Power’
Isildur (Maxim Baldry) and Elendil (Lloyd Owen) first appeared in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 3. Elendil was also given a sword, which is also very important in Peter Jackson’s films “The Lord of the Rings”…
Galadriel, Elrond, Sauron: Three of the most important characters from “The Rings of Power” also play an important role in the “Lord of the Rings” films and books, and therefore should be known to many. In the third episode of the Amazon series, two more famous, albeit less prominent, characters were added: Isildur (Maxim Baldri) and Elendil (Lloyd Owen) – And all fans should also know about Elendil’s sword.
It’s Narcel, the same sword that Isildur used to cut off the ring from Sauron’s finger in the preface to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which finally appeared in Rivendell. In Return of the King, Elrond (Hugo Weaving) reshapes the sword and Narsil cuts become Andrel, Flame of the West – Sword of Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen).
Why does Narsil look so different from the movies?
But why does Narsil look so different in the Amazon series than in the Lord of the Rings films? There is a simple explanation for this: “Rings of Power” is not a prequel to Peter Jackson’s trilogy, but an independent story.
While those behind The Rings of Power own the rights to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and its supplements, as well as The Hobbit. For legal reasons, it’s not the same world as in popular movieswhich was produced after all by Studio Warner and not by Amazon.

Despite some design similarities, the music (the series’ title theme comes from The Lord of the Rings composer Howard Shore) and the overall look (The Rings of Power was also filmed in New Zealand) So there will always be clear differences between series and movies – this is what Narciel’s example shows.
This is why Narsil is so important
But what remains the same in the films The Rings of Power and The Lord of the Rings is the significance of Narsil: as mentioned earlier in the introduction, Narsil is crucial to Sauron’s defeat – and The battle that actually started The Fellowship of the Ring takes place at the end of the second era of Middle-earth, and is also the setting for The Rings of Power.
It is very likely that we will also reach this point in the history of Middle-earth in the planned five seasons of Episodes of Power.even Narsil is allowed to cut off the one ring of Sauron’s finger here too – only that the sword looks different here and Isildur and Elendil are played by different actors.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 4 will be released on September 16, 2022 at 6 AM on Amazon Prime Video. You can also learn more about Narsil in the video above from YouTube moderator Sebastian from minute 4:55.
