‘Sandman’ on Netflix: Neil Gaiman himself bans planned ‘Sandman’ movie
Before Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” comics became a hit series on Netflix, a movie was planned about Dream and his brothers. But the project was prevented by Gaiman himself!
- Sandman creator Neil Gaiman often praises and promotes the Netflix series of the same name.
- But things could have gone differently, because the pre-planned film “Sandman” did not suit Gaiman at all.
- So Gaiman took his luck into his own hands – and banned the movie.
Successful sitcoms don’t stay without filming for long. This is true now more than ever, but promising casts were still very popular in Hollywood in the ’90s. So it’s no surprise that Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” comics have found their way to the big screen multiple times.
But projects always fail, sometimes ambitions go over budget and sometimes you just can’t come to an agreement. The latter happened when film producer John Peters wanted to turn Sandman into an action movie. Geiman, who had never read the entire text, wasn’t as happy as him rolling rock revealed in the interview.
I remember they called me. I am usually polite and nice when you call me. I try to say something positive to the people who contact me. A guy from John Peters’ office called me and said, “Well, Neal, did you have a chance to read the text we sent you?”
And I said, “Well, yeah. Yeah, I have. I haven’t read all of them, but I’ve read enough.” He said, “Well, well, right?” And I said, “Well, no. It’s not really like that.” He said, “Oh, come on. There must be things you like.” I said, “There wasn’t anything I liked. There wasn’t anything I liked. It was the worst script I’ve ever read by anyone. It’s just not the worst script from ‘Sandman.’ It was the worst script that was ever sent.” “.
So in the movie, Dream, Lucifer, and Corinthian were supposed to be identical triplets, all trying to get their hands on Ruby, the Helm, and Sand before the start of the new millennium. So the story was completely ignored from the comics, plus there must have been giant mechanical spiders because it fascinated film producer Peters.
Since Peters didn’t need Gaiman’s approval, the film might have gone into production the same way—if Gaiman hadn’t taken matters into his own hands. He secretly sent the script to Aintitcoolnews.com, which was a staple of the film’s coverage at the time.
The result: an article appeared that completely tore down the script for “The Sandman” and halted the film project. Then John Peters devoted himself to the “Wild West” – a Western science fiction with giant mechanical spiders.
In the end, the series format is probably best suited to “Sandman”, but Gaiman is quite satisfied with the Netflix production. The success of the series also speaks for itself, so the second season is considered likely.
