New Zealand: Severe storm kills four when boat sinks

A storm is currently raging in New Zealand, causing flooding in Auckland in particular. Four fishermen died when their boat sank.

Rescue services found four bodies and one person is still missing after their boat sank on Sunday evening in a storm off Northland, north of the New Zealand archipelago. Police say five other people were rescued after they blew up their ship’s beacon. They were taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The storm, which moved south on Monday morning, reached Auckland with 76.8 millimeters of rain falling within an hour. “The second record of rainfall ever recorded in such a short time in the city.”said the country’s meteorological services.

Highways were cut off by flooding, schools were closed and ferry lines were shut down by heavy rain.

On Monday afternoon, several regions were on a red “severe storm” alert.
Meteorological services raised alerts while warning that “wet weather will continue for many this week as the deep low pressure system approaches to the west.”
