Marnus Labuschagne posted 67 unbeaten and partnered 100 partnerships with Will Pucovski and 60 with Steve Smith to help Australia reach 166-2 in logs after a choppy rain opening day of the third test against India.

Australia won the lottery and was elected to bat at the Sydney Cricket Ground, giving Bukowski an instant taste to test cricket as the 22-year-old started the roles with veteran David Warner.

Warner continued with only eight balls and scored five runs upon his return from injury before chasing a full and wide ball from Muhammad Serag and was initially caught with a total of six balls.

Pucovski got on with Labuschagne and seemed confident at times on his first test and was lucky at times because he’s still in a wrinkle. He had three postponements on his way to 50, a milestone he passed by before tea with straight limits against Navdeep Saini – the first two balls in a cricket test for Indian fast-paced shooter.

He survived a pair of goalkeeper Rishabh Pant’s catching moments at 26 and 32 and a missed opportunity to run out of 39 before luck ran out when lbw was trapped by Saini for 62 in the 35th, giving the Indian man of peace his first wicket test.

Smith struggled for the form in the series’ first two auditions but settled into roles and didn’t come out after he faced 64 deliveries.

The opening 7.1 session lasted just about four hours late for rain. Only 55 matches were played on the first day.

The four-game series of matches tied 1-1 after Australia won the opening game overnight in Adelaide with eight wickets and India hit back with an eight wicket victory in Melbourne last week.
