2021 New Year honors Dave Dupin, Rob Fife and Dame Ann Salmond

Musician Dave Dupin, former Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fife, public health expert Professor Michael Baker and Professor Shawn Hendy, Covid-19 model designer, are among the names on the New Year’s honor roll.

Two individuals have received the highest honor, the New Zealand Medal – Honorary Professor Sir Mason Dorey for his transformative approach to Maori health, and Distinguished Professor Dam Ann Salmond for her work on intercultural exchanges and environmental issues.

Two of the most prominent names during the Covid-19 pandemic – Hendy and Baker – have been honored for their efforts, becoming members of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Other notable additions to the list of members of the New Zealand Order of Merit Cocksedge for her contributions to rugby are Professor Bronwyn Hayward, Director of Sustainable Development and the Civic Imagination Research Group at the University of Canterbury.

Burton Shipley, husband of former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, was awarded the title of Officer for his work in the Basketball Department, and Associate Professor James Tully has also been named for his accomplishments in the press.

Thirteen Pacific leaders were included in the New Year’s honor, representing a range of sectors including health, education, society, arts, sports, media and the public sector.

“These Pacific beneficiaries have all demonstrated leadership, dedication and perseverance in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, and each has made a real difference to the communities they worked with,” said Minister of the Pacific People, Obito William Sew.

Afamasaga Vaafusuaga Telesia McDonald Alipia’s participation in early childhood education in the Pacific was celebrated with the title of Officer, while Senior Reverend Tomama Feli, a staunch advocate of Samoa and the wider Pacific community on the South Island, has been named a member.

“This is just a glimpse of the important contributions that all of the beneficiaries from the Pacific have made and highlights the huge role they have played in supporting our communities in the Pacific,” said Seo.

Ardern said the standout theme on this year’s list is that while the work of those honored has improved life in New Zealand, the job continues.

The New Zealand Royal Honors System is used to thank and congratulate people for their community service and to recognize achievements. There were 154 recipients in 2021, including athletes, environmental activists, scientists, medical professionals, judges and educators.
