The memorial opened on May 27

As part of the commemoration of slavery, a new memorial space was opened in Petit-Canal. The panels standing next to the Marches des Esclaves list 5451 the names of slaves freed by the decree of May 27, 1848. Next to each first name, you’ll find the assigned titles. You are invited to find you.

This Friday the 27th, an instrument of imposition is set ablaze to honor the lost and to represent the freedom gained. Under his feet, the Order of Nyabinge and the Municipality of Petit Kanal placed the offerings to the ancestors. After the religious rites to thank all those who fought against injustice and discrimination, the official address of the Petit Canal Mayor Blaise Mornal was given. The focus of this year’s event will explain:

“This year’s celebration took on the theme of transmission. Now that everyone has been informed of their past, it is important to pass on that knowledge. So we pay special attention to family bonds and intergenerational exchanges. We have chosen to put in place the means to offer both Canale and Guadeloupe an opportunity to reflect on their ancestors today because The date of May 27 is already one of the most important in Guadeloupe. Thanks to their hard struggle, we are free today. We must think about it, we must celebrate these freedom fighters.”

At the bottom of a fresco depicting two slaves fleeing to freedom pursued by their dogs, now stands several paintings in which 5,451 names of the slaves are listed.
