This is a true historical game – but not for the reason you might expect.

It’s technically the first PlayStation 5 game that I play.

(I don’t count Astro games roomThe mini-game that comes with the new console, which is elegant but is really more than just a demo.)

So, my expectations are high when I download the PS5 version of the Dirt 5 – A bit complicated process like technically the revision code for the PS4 version, which then gets a free upgrade to the PS5 version, and when the code is entered, both versions start downloading and it’s not immediately clear what that is.

Ultimately, things are sorted, and I quickly go into career mode for the final title – fifth Dirt, But the fourteenth year was originally titled Colin McCray Raleigh List – in the off-road arcade racing series.

Everything is very familiar and easy to follow.

Compete in a few early races, earn some virtual cash and XP, unlock new events, buy or decorate some vehicles, vroom vroom.

Within the profession, there are different types of races – point-to-point races, rally raids, rallycross races and more – and in each race there are challenges, such as overtaking a certain number of cars while drifting, and maintaining a certain speed.

This provides some decent diversity, as well as the opportunity to compete in “defeats” against specific competitors.

It all takes place within a comprehensive storyline that gives you a mentor and a chance to listen to what seem like hours of mock podcast discussing different events.

On the track, the movement is fast, intense and gritty.

The vehicles you drive don’t look much different, but they do give you a good sense of power and speed.

My first true taste of the PS5 comes through the console, its use of haptic technology – a really varied vibration to match movement on the screen – and its adaptive triggers, which boost resistance to make it look like you’re actually fighting gravel and mud.

Graphically, things are very good, and if not too amazing, they make your jaw drop.

Lots of events happen in almost gloomy and dark conditions that are actually more upsetting than impressive.

Career Mode can be a simple version after a while but there are enough customization and unlockable options to satisfy most players.

I am also intrigued by the inclusion of Playgrounds for user designed tracks.

I am known to be useless doing this kind of thing, but it’s nice to be able to download other people’s unusual creations.

Dirt 5 Don’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. If you love that your driving games focus on arcade games more than simulation, this is the very early captain of the best example of its kind in the new generation.
