Canada eliminates unemployment benefits for unvaccinated people
The government said Canadians who have not been vaccinated will not be able to benefit from unemployment benefits “as long as public health concerns remain at the fore.”
Canada has announced that it will eliminate employment insurance, the equivalent of unemployment benefits, for people who have not been vaccinated. The announcement was made by Labor Secretary Carla Caltroh as a Radio Canada unveiledThursday, December 30. “Unemployed Canadians who refuse to be vaccinated could be denied benefits as long as public health concerns remain at the fore,” the minister said.
The Liberal government justifies this decision on economic grounds, in order to reduce the risks of pollution and thus not to close workplaces. A measure has also been put in place to encourage more Canadians to get vaccinated.
until a further notice
The minister clarified that this new rule does not apply to people who have been granted a “medical exemption”.
According to Radio Canada, this measure should be in place until further notice. “I don’t know how long this will last,” the minister added. He insisted: “For as long as the collective public health of Canadians and our economy is threatened, we will have to keep public health policy at the forefront of our decisions.”
