Several scholars have actively contributed along with other scholars to the movement of rational organisations. This presentation will review their investments and the history of these associations that – if they rarely exceed a thousand members – constitute something for the social sciences that makes it possible to understand how “truth” or “the defense of science” can be. It has been permanently erected as a political argument from generation to generation, from the anti-clerical struggles of the 1930s to debates over the precautionary principle at the beginning of the 21st century.

Sylvain Lorenz is Director of Studies at EHESS. He works exclusively on public and private uses of scientific authority.
