Jannis Niewöhner in Style Questionnaire
In Muenster’s “Tatort”, Janis Niewöhner had his first role at the age of ten. This was followed by children’s films (The Wild Chickens and Love) and youth films (Cheeky Girls 2). He played the first character Niewöhner, who was born in Krefeld in 1992, in 2012 in the movie “The Year After Tomorrow” by Elron Jowett. Six years later, he was a hit with Alain Gsponer’s “Jugend ohne Gott”. Films adapted from the novels suit Berlin in his choice: last year he was seen as Goldmund in Hermann Hesse’s “Narcissus and Goldmund”, and in September, “Confessions of a fraudster Felix Kroll” (directed by Detlev Back) will be shown in the cinema – with Janis Neuner in the title role.
What do you eat for breakfast?
Good old muesli with oat flakes and DIY fruit. In addition, coffee and not tea.
Where do you buy your clothes?
Mostly on the set. Fashion designers get the best of things, and if the clothes don’t come from the store, you can sometimes buy them. I just don’t have the good vision when shopping for it, nor the patience to do so.
What is the oldest piece of clothing in your closet?
Totally perforated T-shirt. But I refuse to get rid of it because there is a story about it. I used to go to Formentera with my dad and every year we took a strange tourist thing from there that was saying “Formentera”. My dad bought this shirt sometime in the 90’s.
When was the last time you wrote a letter by hand?
About five months ago, for a director that I think is really cool. I just heard about a new movie project that I would like to be a part of. With this message I wanted to give my attention more weight. She also answered. But I won’t tell you more.
What book has impressed you the most in your life?
The first thing that comes to mind is Hermann Hess’ Narcissus and Goldmund. The book really took me with me, and I’m sure many young people start their lives after school. And at that time I felt as strong as Goldmond.
How do you know world events?
I read newspapers, not on paper, but on my cell phone. Other sources are friends who study philosophy and history, for example. It gives me a different perspective on things, just like my films, like Christian Chauchau’s “Je suis Karl” recently, which is about terrorism and a young woman who falls in rebellious love.

What is your favorite small talk topic?
Small talk always starts with a short summary of what you’re doing. Hopefully this will lead to other more important and more interesting topics.
What was the last movie you cried in?
I actually cry a lot while watching movies. Recently when I watched “The Art of Winning – Moneyball” again.
Are you superstitious?
No. Only if it’s connected to something good.
What can you laugh about?
About the British comedian Ricky Gervais, the American Jonah Hill or the German comedian Teddy Tickleberhan. And basically about situational comedy.
Your favorite first names?
Noah for a girl and Bella for a boy.
Do you take a lunch break?
Not anymore. I used to do this a lot on set, but mostly because I was eating a lot at lunchtime. At some point I realized that this was why I was feeling so tired. Now I’m eating a portion less and being fitter throughout the day.
In which country do you prefer to live?
I am very happy here in Germany. But I can also live well in New Zealand, at least in my mind.
What is your refrigerator not missing?
fruit. Simply apple, pear and peach.
Do you feel more free with or without the car?
without. I have a bike. It’s like you’re standing in a car in Berlin, but you’re always on the move with your bike, and you can ride faster.
What is your greatest talent?
My openness to all kinds of personalities, including in real life. I like dealing with people without judgment.
What do you do when that is unreasonable?
My strategy is to label everything other people deem as unreasonable as acceptable to me, at least the moment I do it.
Which historical person would you like to meet?
I would like to meet my grandfather again, but he is not a historical person. Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg may have been, because she fought for her cause without malice. Even in regards to the bad old white men who sat before her in the Supreme Court, I thought they were young children I could teach something new.

The allure of Chanel.
What was your best vacation experience?
In an old camping site on the Brittany coast. He was in the woods and the trailers were criss-cross. I have been there with friends and family every summer and have many fond memories of it.

At a small band concert at the “Dalston Jazz Bar” in London.

Fortunately, nothing.

Only hot water. Beer and wine anyway.
