Almeida wins the first stage of the Skoda Tour
A favourite in the event was Joao Almeida, who took the top jersey of the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg, from the first stage, with a victory at Kirchberg. The strongest was on Tuesday who defeated Bucky Mollema and Mark Hershey at the stake. Luc Vertgen, Luxembourg’s highest-ranked burger, took 13th place. He parted ways with the race from the start, notably with New Zealander Jack Power, who held out in the peloton until the last kilometres, before finishing in Kirchberg.
Young Luxemburger Luc Vertgen (23) finished 13th on this mountainous stage, with a tough climb towards Kirchberg, in the final kilometres. In the recovery phase, Bob Jungles and Ben Gastauer, competing in the last race of their career, several minutes later, having worked with their fellow AG2R-Citroën Clément Champoussin, finally reached fourth.
This Wednesday, stage two will drive the peloton from Steinfort to Eschdorf. So solid, it should make it possible to achieve the first dignified amongst the finalists on Saturday.
