Golfer Lydia Koe dedicated the bronze medal to the late grandmother – Marseille News

After winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, Lydia Koe is now a two-time Olympic medalist, and the New Zealand golfer dedicated her new medal to her late grandmother who died during the Games.

Ko – who also won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics – finished third in the competition after losing in a silver-medal playoff to Japan’s Moon Inami, while US team Nelly Korda won the gold. Ko-65 was killed in the final round.

And in a poignant interview afterwards with a bronze medal around her neck, Koe said she played with her late grandmother all week — as well as her family and country — and dedicated the medal to her.

“I just wanted to make my family really proud and be proud of my country. And being able to win a medal for them, I think it means a lot…it’s for my grandmother.

The 24-year-old LPGA star and former World No. 1 told the Golf Channel:

Quand j’étais là-bas en train de jouer, j’ai dit toute la semaine que je jouais pour mon pays, et c’est un immense privilège de pouvoir représenter la Nouvelle-Zélande et d’avoir pu rapporter deux médailles à la New Zealand I am very honored.

“Actually, in our own lives, we lost our grandmother less than a week ago, I think, and I think I was playing for her too. …

“I just wanted to make our family really proud and our country proud, and to be able to win a medal for them, I think it doesn’t mean a lot to me but to everyone who has taken this journey with me. So this is for my grandmother.

Koe finished the Olympic tournament with a 70-67-66-65 performance.
