New knife attack in Germany, suspect arrested

This is the second attack in three days. Two people were stabbed with knives on Monday in German city of Erfurt Local police said a man was later arrested at his home. Thuringia city police (center) said the two passersby, aged 45 and 68, were taken to hospital and that their lives are not in danger.

Then the alleged attacker, who managed to escape, was arrested, and he, too, was wounded in his apartment. Erfurt police said the 32-year-old cut himself. Police said the motive for the attacks has yet to be determined. The suspect and his victims did not know each other. “There is no indication of a politically motivated crime,” police said.

Three dead Friday

The attack came three days after a Somali man who arrived in Germany in 2015 and suffers from mental disorders stabbed three people in the Bavarian city center of Würzburg on Friday before his arrest.

In this case, investigators are trying to determine whether this “astonishingly brutal” attack, according to a local elected official, was motivated by Islamic extremism or the alleged perpetrator’s psychological distress.
