It will be a strange summer for Italian rugby who will not play any international test matches for the second year in a row. And if last year the oval of the world was interrupted by a pandemic, then this year it is the Azores that have stood in full swing. It’s still due to the Covid-19 emergency, but not only.

In July, the Italy to New Zealand tour is scheduled, with a double challenge against the All Blacks. However, travel restrictions, and adherence to quarantine for long periods, led to the Italian rugby union canceling the two test matches, which would be the first with Kieran Crowley at the helm of the team.

However, the tests between the All Blacks and Italy are not the only tests canceled Some teams (mainly New Zealand) have staged other, closer challenges, as the pandemic problem has made travel possible. It is not the Azzurri who saw themselves isolated from potential tests against other teams in the Six Nations, while preferring not to organize matches with the so-called level 2.

It must be said officially that the door was not closed by President Marzio Innocenti, who has repeatedly said that if the opportunity arises, a match will be organized with countries such as Romania, Georgia or Spain. But after weeks, these options have remained hypothetical, and therefore, this summer you will find Italy training together in two marches, the first in the next few days, but the next official commitments will be only in November.
