Wellington A powerful earthquake in the South Pacific Ocean rocked the island nation of Tonga on Friday. It had a magnitude of 7.3, according to the US Seismological Agency. Its center was about 210 km east-southeast of the city of Neafu at a depth of 24.8 km.

US geoscientists expected severe tremors, but rated the risk of severe damage as fairly low. The US Warning System issued a Tsunami Warning (Advisory), which is a level below the Tsunami Warning Level.
In January, an undersea volcanic eruption in Tonga killed three people and blanketed the main island in a thick layer of volcanic ash.
