Tourists trapped in an emergency in Shanghai Disneyland
Confined tourists must remain inside the park “until they are tested negative on site.”
The Disneyland theme park was closed Monday in Shanghai due to the emergency closure imposed by the Chinese authorities, as tourists were unable to leave its territory until they tested negative for Covid-19.
In a statement posted online on Monday, the authorities said that the tourists would have to stay inside the theme park “until they are tested negative at the site.”
Authorities have assured all who have visited the park since Thursday that they have tested negative for Covid-19 three times, over three consecutive days and “avoid any participation in group activities”.
Disney had previously announced that the park would “temporarily close with immediate effect in accordance with anti-epidemic measures,” adding, “We will let you know as soon as we schedule a reopening.”
Nearly 2,700 cases were registered on Monday in the country
The park covers a total area of 390 hectares including Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown and Wishing Star Park.
On Monday, 2,699 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in China, including ten asymptomatic cases in Shanghai, according to the National Health Commission.
China is the last major economy to implement a zero Covid policy, which translates into restrictions once positive cases emerge, nearly mandatory PCR tests several times a week or even putting people in quarantine from risk areas.
These measures, which led to the unexpected closure of businesses and factories, are weighing on the economy.
