The United States is considering restrictions on entry for travelers from China, as authorities have abruptly eased measures to combat Covid-19. This was announced by US officials on condition of anonymity on Tuesday 27 September to AFP. “The international community is increasingly concerned about the current Covid-19 outbreaks in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genetic sequence data, reported by [République populaire de Chine]“they said.
Fear of new variables
Infections soared across China as the main pillars of the country’s “zero Covid” policy since early 2020 were dismantled in a matter of weeks. But it is the lack of genetic data that raises most concerns abroad “It is increasingly difficult for public health officials to ensure that they will be able to identify any potential new variants and take immediate action to limit the spread.”US officials explained.
United States of America “Follow scientific evidence and advice from public health experts, consult with partners, and consider similar actions (…) to protect the American people.”They added, citing concerns expressed by the World Health Organization as well as actions taken by Japan, India and Malaysia. Thus, Japan will, starting Friday, restore mandatory PCR tests for travelers from mainland China.
