Seven young Polynesian cyclists win gold in New Zealand
Seven Polynesian cyclists will travel to New Zealand tomorrow morning. They will represent French Polynesia during the Junior Tour of Manawatu. The riders (including one female) range from the Under 15 to Under 19 categories. Today was their last training session before they leave for Aotearoa.
For some, this is their first international competition. It is the same for Gordis Kirliu Dubis, 14, is the youngest on the team. Determined and enthusiastic, he intends to bring gold back to the ring plant. “I am really happy to represent Polynesia and I want to show that we are not here to make up numbers, and that we really want to win!”He said Gordis, U15 cyclist.
It took one month of intensive preparation and training. The team's coach, Kaheri, supervises these young men 3 to 4 times a week. On this journey, he has a very specific goal. “The aim of the game is to get as many gold medals as possible. That's why we're so ambitious, that's why we have very high goals. We're a fairly united team, and we support each other, especially with Cassandra who's the only female on the team.”explains Kahiri Endeler, coach of the Tahitian cycling team.
The Tahiti jersey will be honorably represented by these seven athletes. The competition will take place next weekend, August 3-4.
