Samsung literally showcases the capabilities of a 200MP smartphone sensor
This summer, the Motorola Frontier is expected to be the first smartphone to be marketed with the popular ISOCELL HP1 sensor. Samsung tried to demonstrate the performance of this sensor with a concept video.
What is the benefit of a 200 megapixel sensor? We know that the higher the definition, the higher the level of detail, but on smartphones the display limits of the device are quickly reached. Thus, to prove that equipping a device with such a sensor is not completely useless, Samsung pulled all the stops. With a 1 minute, 24 second video, the chaebol struggles to impress you. The result ? A kitten shot of 28 meters by 22, or 616 square metres… Not really the classic print, then.
Impressive stay
But beware, it wasn’t the classic smartphone that made this animal portrait. It’s not even a smartphone at all. It is said to be a sensor mounted on a large motherboard and equipped with a custom fit ring and lens for a 24×36 camera, all of which are connected to several cables, including the RJ45, to a computer. Once the shot was taken, it was printed and then the different parts were sewn together to give the end result. You’ll agree with this system that’s impractical for normal humans, especially since Samsung specifies that the result was processed by software, and therefore does not reflect the reality you can expect with a smartphone like the Motorola Frontier, which will be the first terminal with a 200MP sensor.
for what ?
This sensor does not automatically mean that the quality of the photos will be exceptional, because it also depends on the ability (well) to manage the light. On the other hand, it guarantees the ability to zoom in and bring out some perfectly clear details. Here it is easier to crop without losing quality or even crop a single image to create several new images and thus highlight one or more details. So it’s not the size that matters, even if the maximum pixels make it possible to take pictures in very high resolution. So this type of image is also suitable for photo prints, including in very (very) large formats, where they remain perfectly sharp.
