Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 review: The updated book-shaped foldable smartphone
Like its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 hosts a full triple camera module, consisting of a 50MP main sensor with wide-angle optics, a 12MP ultra-wide angle and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens. In short, a versatile photo shutter.
Wide-angle unit: 50 MP, f/1.8, 23mm equivalent
In bright light, exposure is well balanced and the display is more faithful to reality than the previous model. If the color gamut is tempting to the eye, it is a little less saturated than usual. And while the images taken with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 show a certain loss of sharpness at the edges, we notice the effort of software processing to restore small details, especially in the center of the image.
At night, digital noise covers the image, affecting textures, especially in the center and more clearly at the edges. This issue was already noticed with the S24 series, which was launched earlier in 2024. Despite this, the result is more natural than the previous version with brighter colors and less yellowing than those of the OnePlus Open. The edges are also better defined, providing more readable and usable shots.
Ultra wide-angle unit: 12 MP, f/2.2, 12mm equivalent
Wide-angle shots are often a problem on smartphones, but the Galaxy Z Fold 6 stands out a bit. Colors remain consistent and details are better rendered, though there is a noticeable softening effect that reduces artifacts but detracts from overall sharpness. Additionally, we notice a more pronounced tendency towards overexposure compared to its rival.
In night shots, digital noise becomes more present, seeking to preserve maximum detail in the images. Unlike its Chinese competitor, which prefers intensive smoothing, but produces blurry images with a veil effect and unnatural colors, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers a different approach to obtain a more usable result.
3x telephoto unit: 10 MP, f/2.4, 66mm equivalent
The Galaxy Z Fold 6's 3x zoom module is similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra's and follows the same trend. Compared to the OnePlus Unlock photos, the photos taken with the Samsung foldable smartphone are better exposed with sharp lines, decent color gamut, and good contrast.
In the dark, the images are filled with digital noise, making them hardly acceptable for social media. Conversely, the OnePlus Open favors excessive smoothing and highlighting of lines, resulting in images that look very artificial.
Front unit, portrait mode and video
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 uses a 10MP front-facing sensor housed in a central punch-hole on the outer display, like its predecessors. Once opened, we also find a 4MP sensor which, like the Galaxy Z Fold 5, is positioned below the display and is tied for a modest resolution, resulting in a fairly average display, better suited to video calls. Thankfully, the 10MP sensor generally delivers good results for selfies, although faces often look a little too soft.
Portrait mode provides accurate cropping and a sufficient level of detail. On the video side, the smartphone can shoot up to 8K at 30fps with OIS on the main sensor and telephoto lens, and up to 4K at 60fps with the selfie camera. Not enough to make a successful movie, but enough to collect some beautiful memories.
