Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti review: sold to play at 1440p, and 4K isn’t intimidating

We discussed the changes made by the Ada Lovelace architecture in our test of GeForce RTX 4090 We refer you to this article to learn more about it. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti doesn’t use the same graphics chip as the GeForce RTX 4090 (AD102) or GeForce RTX 4080 (AD103), but a slightly smaller version called the AD104. This contains 35.8 billion transistors, compared to the RTX 4080’s 45.9 billion.

Silicon contains 5 GPC blocks, resulting in 7680 Classic Computing Units (CUDA cores). The number of RT cores of the third generation is 60 and those for artificial intelligence (the fourth generation of Tensor cores) are 240, as well as the number of units dedicated to rendering textures. Obviously the large L2 cache scheme is repeated here, but only 49MB in size.

Chip engraving is still entrusted to TSMC via the N4 process – 5nm, in fact – which allows Nvidia to offer a fairly high operating frequency. Thus the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is declared at 2610MHz on average.

For the memory part, Nvidia has chosen to integrate 12GB of GDDR6X running at 2625MHz on a 192-bit bus only. This results in a total memory bandwidth of 504 GB/s, which is a relatively low value for the “70 Ti” model; For example, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti has 608 GB/s and the RTX 3080 760 GB/s. However, Ada Lovelace’s architectural developments must make up for this reduction in carbs.

Power consumption is given for 285 watts, but Nvidia advertises actual operation as between 150 and 240 watts depending on the game and the driver used. There is no reference card (Founder’s Edition) for sale and so only Nvidia partners offer their own “variants”. Thus, we will find both models with technical characteristics and others with frequencies and consumption limits adjusted to the highest.

We ran our tests on a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Gaming OC, a very marginally overclocked version (+30MHz on the graphics chip) whose power limit was unaffected. In short, a model that, with its three fans, can be considered a basic model in terms of performance and energy consumption.
