Nvidia cancels the release of the 12GB GeForce RTX 4080 card
At the GTC, which took place last month, Nvidia announced three graphics cards: GeForce RTX 4090 As a standard stand to show off all the capabilities of the new Ada Lovelace architecture and two GeForce RTX 4080s. The first has 12 GB of video memory and the second has 16 GB. However, Nvidia not only reduced the amount of memory, but also the number of computing units inside the GPU. A choice particularly contested by all observers since the announcement with fear of confusion among buyers.
Finally, the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB will not see the light of day, at least not under that name. After Nvidia simply reported that it has canceled the release of the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB normally scheduled for November. An option that we can welcome only if we take into account the “wobbly” position of the card and the name that would mislead buyers every time.
It remains to be seen what happens to the RTX 4080 12GB which Nvidia partners should have already started producing. In PNY for example, the product page for the RTX 4080 12 GB is now back to page 404The most economical and most likely solution is to rename this model by editing the BBIOS of the graphic cards and print new tiles by changing 8 to 7 for example.
Nvidia will also have to reevaluate its pricing strategy, as the entry ticket for the RTX 40s now goes from €1099 to €1469 with the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB gone.
