Destructive tornadoes killed at least 25 people in the US state of Mississippi last weekend. The restaurant’s owners and staff escaped by hiding in the facility’s giant freezer.
When the tornado hit Rolling Fork, Mississippi (United States), residents had only a few minutes to seek shelter. For restaurant workers, salvation came from a huge refrigerator. “This refrigerator saved nine lives. If God had not warned us of a hurricane, we would all have died in the restaurant that was here.”One of the survivors testifies.
We cried and cried and prayed too.
It only takes a few seconds for customers to realize what’s going to hit them. Then the owner has a reaction: push everyone into the cold room. “We were in the fridge. It was as if we were being thrown all over the place. Everyone was on top of each other. We were trying to get the shelves attached to the walls. (…) We screamed and cried and prayed too. And suddenly it all stopped.”says Tracy Hardin, owner of Chuck’s Dairy Bar. Nine people survived in the cold room. Other residents are not so lucky. In Rolling Fork alone, 13 people lost their lives.
