Jonny Bristow says he is delighted to begin his ‘New England Journey’ in Test cricket under new manager Brendon McCollum and captain Ben Stokes.
Jonny Birstow is set to start England’s first Test of the summer against New Zealand at Lords Stadium on Thursday, seeing competition from youngster Harry Brook who had been hoping to make his debut.

There is one final spot to decide, as Craig Overton and newcomer Matt Potts of Durham battle it out for the last bowling spot alongside James Anderson, Stewart Broad, Ben Stokes and Jack Leach.
A look back at some of the most memorable moments between England and New Zealand.
Stokes will lead England for the first time as permanent test captain on Thursday, with new coach Brendon McCollum also overseeing his first game in charge against his home country.
“Of course it is [exciting]Bairstow said sky sport.
“he is [McCullum] He is someone I have always wanted to work with. I was playing against him and I grew up watching him, he was someone who really piqued my interest and admired him in so many ways – the way he handled cricket.
“I’m really excited to be working with him for a long time, hopefully.”
England Test chief Brendon McCollum said Ben Stokes is the right man to lead the team.
Birstow added: “We also know what Stokes brings, his leadership qualities that he’s had on the court for a very, very long time.
“There is a lot of positivity about the band.”
England’s new era in test cricket may take some time
Bairstow, who was part of England’s 2019 World Cup winning squad, cautioned against raising expectations too soon, citing the example of the white ball team as they were falling short of their fortunes after a group stage exit at the 2015 World Cup.
England have won just one and lost 11 of their last 17 Tests, a streak that included a landslide 4-0 victory at the Ashes over the winter, which saw Chris Silverwood leave as coach, and marked the end of Joe Root’s leadership, though he retained the position on the Isles Tour. Later West Indies.
Brendon McCullum, coach of the New England Tests, hopes to help his team regain the popularity of red ball cricket.
“First of all it’s about taking a stake, going out and winning key periods of play and winning cricket matches,” Birstow said. “This is what we are here to do and what we want to do.
“But it takes time to play that way. We saw that with the white ball team and how that transition took time, the change that took.
“It would undoubtedly be the same with this, but that’s the exciting part.
New Zealand bowler Neil Wagner said it would be strange to face former coach Brendon McCollum when they face England.
And the way Ben plays red ball cricket and the way Buzz plays [McCullum] Playing his red ball and his white cricket, I’m sure there will be things going down in the environment over the next few weeks, months and years.”
