Joe Joyce may be open to a British heavyweight fight against Derek Chisora while he waits for the global fight, says Frank Warren | boxing news
Promoter Frank Warren has said Joe Joyce may be open to a British fight against Derek Chisora while he awaits his World Heavyweight Championship title fight.
Joyce retained his place as the WBO’s next mandatory contender with a sixth-round victory over Carlos Takam at Wembley Arena on Saturday night.
The 35-year-old will target the winning WBO, WBA and IBF title defense Anthony Joshua against Oleksandr Usyk on September 25, live Sky Sports Ticket Office, but Chisora could appear in Joyce’s immediate plans.
“We tried to fight for July 24, and we really did,” promoter Frank Warren said. Air Sports.
“His team told me he didn’t want to. He even said the same thing this weekend and wanted to fight [Joseph] Parker and not Joe Joyce.
“The reward from defeating Joe would put Derek number one in the WBO, but he wants to fight Parker, the lowest ranked man?” That’s the mentality, I think, after 11 losses.
“The point is, Joe is #1 in the WBO and he’s AJ’s next winner against Usyk and that’s where we’re focused.
“He’s the best man in the heavyweight division to break into the Fury, AJ, Wilder world title scene.
“But if Joe and his team told me they wanted to fight while we wait for AJ or Usyk, someone like Del Boy could work. He would have given Joe a few rounds before he broke and stopped.”
Chisora is yet to finish his rematch with Joseph Parker after suffering a split decision loss to the New Zealander in May.
