Google is improving Android performance on some smartphones
Google announces on its blog that it has modified an element of Android that will improve the overall performance of the operating system. The new feature is currently relevant to only a few smartphones, but it may eventually benefit all smartphones.

Android performance will be improved thanks to Google's new support for 16KB pages. If that doesn't mean anything to you, that's okay. Google explains on its blog that Android will now be “Indifferent to page size” Support for 4KB and 16KB pages Specifically, developers will have the ability to switch between 4KB and 16KB pages on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones with the first beta of Android 15 QPR1.

But ultimately, this will represent an overall performance improvement across all Android devices. That will result in better quality videos, more efficient gaming, and smoother apps. Google specifies:
“In most processors, dedicated hardware components called memory management units (MMUs) translate the addresses used by the program into a physical location in memory. This translation is done based on the size of the page. Every time a program needs more memory, the operating system has to step in and fill up a “page table” entry, allocating that portion of memory to the process. When the page size is four times larger, compatibility is four times lower. So the system can spend more time making sure your videos look good and games and apps run well.”
In other words, Google is now offering a new tool for developers to improve Android performance. The American giant claims to have seen a 5 to 10% improvement in overall performance thanks to the use of larger pages. However, this comes with a small trade-off: 9% more physical memory is used. Add to that the significant consumption of AI in RAM, and we now better understand why the Google Pixel 9 has 12 to 16 GB of RAM.
