For the Red Lions and Red Panthers, ‘Courtois case is impossible in hockey’: ‘We respect each other a lot’
On Wednesday, the Red Lions and Red Panthers continue to assess the Pro League in Antwerp. Today’s test is New Zealand. On the pitch, Michel van den Hoeffel and Raoul Ehren have no big surprises in store…at the captain’s level. Unlike the Red Devils, the topic is not sensitive. The captaincy generally goes to an experienced player who speaks French, Dutch and English well and is appreciated by the whole group. At the Red Lions, the captaincy went to different players in June because the squad was not complete. Since Felix Denayer’s return, the question has not been raised.
“With us, it’s simple.”explains audience darling Victor Wiggins. “Felix is our captain. Arthur van Doren helps him. There is no tension because everyone puts the team’s interest before their own. We love each other so much that anyone could wear an armband if Flex and Tor weren’t around. We will always respect the coach’s choice by cheering for who wearing it.
And the speedy midfielder joins in the action with his words: “In London, De Slover and I were leaders because the seniors were absent. On the field we found Loick Luypaert and John-John Dohmen who had more experience. They had no problem with Michel’s decision.”
It even goes further than that. “A situation like the one that shakes the Red Devils is impossible with us. We respect each other too much to present ourselves as individuals.”
Leo remembers the characteristics of what he considers a good leader: “A player who respects the group, has a presence, highlights the group and speaks well.”
On the Red Panthers side, the operating situation is a little different. The captain’s armband is shared by three Reds players: Barbara Nelin, Alex Gerniers and Michael Strwick. As far as I know, no one is complaining about this situationAlex Gerniers explains. All three of us complement each other so well with different personalities. We get along with all the girls. To be honest, I don’t really remember how the decision was made. We live like this for two years. I don’t think the coach will change for Euros.”
On Wednesday, the Lions and Panthers will once again be directed by their captain. Whatever his name.
