Dubreuil and Gélinas-Beaulieu on the podium in the 1000m in Calgary
Quebec’s Laurent Dubrelle and Antoine Gelinas Beaulieu shone in the 1,000m by winning silver and bronze, respectively, at the World Cup Speed Skating on Calgary’s long track on Sunday.
Dutchman Hein Otterspier recorded a winning time of 1 minute 7.284 seconds. Dubreuil finished just two-hundredths of a second behind him.
Dubreuil, winner of the men’s 500m on Saturday, was half a second faster at the 600m mark, but couldn’t keep up the pace down the home stretch.
Livesian is the reigning Olympic vice-champion in the event.
Gélinas-Beaulieu (1:07.32) earned her first World Cup podium in an individual event.
The 30-year-old Sherbrooke resident also helped Canada win silver in the team pursuit on Friday.
Ottawa’s Yvonne Blondin was stripped of her third place position in the women’s mass start event when officials disqualified her for an infringement.
The Olympic silver medalist in the event was found guilty of slowing down a competitor when she changed lanes at the start of the race.
The Dutch Irene Schotten and Marijki Gronod took first and third place respectively, while the American Mia Kilburg took the silver.
Italian Andrea Giovannini (7:53.04) won the men’s mass start, ahead of New Zealander Peter Michael (7:55.62) and Kazakhstan’s Vitaly Zhigolev (7:55.85).
Dutch Jutta Leerdam (1:12.82) won her third race in the women’s 1000m in as many races this season. American Kim Goetz (1:13.53) took home the silver medal, while Austria’s Vanessa Herzog (1:13.56) took home the podium.
The Canadian team, hosts of the competition, won five medals, including two golds, in the first of two consecutive World Cup speed skating stops at the Calgary site. Three more days of competition will start on Friday.
