Appointed Tana Umaga as coach for the Moana Pasifika Super Rugby series
Tana Umaga will be challenged to do better than her predecessor and former teammate Aaron Mauger. The franchise has finished 12th and last in the standings for the past two editions.
The Moana Pasifika Super Rugby franchise on Sunday announced the appointment of former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga as head coach for three years. “Moana Pacifica has always held a special place in my heart since its inception.“, captivated the person who was the first descendant of Samoa to become captain of New Zealand in 2004.”I was deeply honored by this opportunity“.
Moana Pasifika, a young series created in 2020, joined Super Rugby in the 2022 edition. Although it is based in Auckland (New Zealand), it represents the Pacific Islands. The majority of the players on the team are from the islands of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, but there are also players from New Zealand and Australia on the team.
After three years of experience in Toulon between 2007 and 2010, Umaga returned to coaching in his native country, first in the provinces of Manukau and then as a manager with the Blues, in Super Rugby, between 2016 and 2018.
