A fourth volcanic eruption began in southwest Iceland on Saturday evening, March 16. The population of Grindavik was evacuated again.
You can almost hear the Earth's heartbeat. In Iceland, once again, the ground cracked under the pressure of magma. Thousands of liters of molten lava flowed during a spectacular eruption that began on the evening of March 16. A crack more than three kilometers long appeared. The lava fountains were so high that they were almost visible from a tourist site that was evacuated in the evening.
The fourth volcanic eruption in a few months
The small Icelandic town of Grindavik, located near a lava wall, was also evacuated. In November 2023, the 4,000 residents had already left after the volcano erupted. Only about a hundred of them settled, because the peninsula in the southwest of the country experienced its fourth volcanic eruption in a few months.
In this deserted area, only scientists go out to collect samples. The Icelandic government has announced that it wants to buy back housing in the area, where nature appears to have reclaimed its rights.
