Disqualified in women’s doubles due to accidentally hitting a collector with a ball, Miyu Kato turns the page by lifting the title in mixed doubles with Germany’s Tim Puetz.

Japanese Mio Kato ended her disqualification in the women’s doubles at Roland Garros by winning the mixed doubles title with Germany’s Tim Putz on Thursday. The pair defeated Canadian Bianca Andreescu and New Zealander Michael Venus 4-6, 6-4 (10-6) in the final match at Court Philippe Chatrier.

Kato and her Indonesian partner Aldela Sutjiadi were disqualified from the women’s doubles event in the third round earlier in the week against Czech Marie Bouzkova and Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo a few days earlier.
Kato hit a ball on the court between the two points, and inadvertently hit the ball girl. Chief Justice Aleksandr Gouge issued a warning to Kato, but Bouzkova and Sarah Sorribes Tormo suggested that the ball player was in tears. After speaking with the girl, the referee returns to his chair and announces the disqualifications of Kato and Sutjiadi, leaving the Japanese player in tears.

Kato, who later said on Twitter that in addition to being disqualified for losing her prize money and points for the women’s doubles competition, received a lot of support from her fellow players. “It was mentally difficult after the disqualification. I want to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages of supportKato said in the speech that she made it back after the final. “I was able to use all the positive energy to be here today. Thanks to Aldila and all the Indonesian fans. I will do my best so that one day we can come back and win the women’s doubles title.”My disqualification is unfortunate, and I hope my appeal will lead to a positive outcome. So I can get my points and my money backconcluded.

For its part, the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) announced that Kato and Sotjiadi were disqualified.Unjustified, disproportionate and unfair“.
