After 16 years of Apple, Microsoft is finally revolutionizing backup for Windows PCs

It’s a small revolution that Windows 11 PCs are about to experience. Microsoft has just announced the upcoming launch of its Windows Backup application. Principle: it allows you to save the entire content of your computer, to restore it to a new one.

In 2007, Apple unveiled Time Machine with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. It’s a complete backup software that was revolutionary for its time, when files were still manually backed up to external hard drives… or DVDs. Since then, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge, and backup is no longer really a taboo word, especially with the development of various clouds.

Last year, Microsoft announced the future arrival of an app to back up your entire PC, so you can migrate content to another PC. The idea: strength Buying a new computer, finding all the contents of the old computer, as if it had been teleported, as if by magic.. Same icons, same apps, same files. In short, the same content.

Windows Backup finally appears

This new application, which responds to the pretty name of Windows Backup, starts pointing at the muzzle of the program. This is what we learn Microsoft via a blog post Intended for Insiders lucky enough to be able to test preview builds (build 23466 in this case).

This new application allows you to select folders, files, applications (and their content), parameters (system) and icons (Wi-Fi for example) to be backed up. Backed up to the Microsoft cloud (One Drive), which offers 5 GB for free. If you want to back up an entire computer, you will certainly have to go to the cash register, to take a paid plan, which also allows you to store other files, via OneDrive compatible applications such as the Office suite for example.

Microsoft specifies that with this development release, Windows Backup does not support backing up all settings yet and all applications. A minor inconvenience that should not be on the agenda when this feature is officially released on Windows 11.

Of course, third-party apps already do almost the same job. But not as easy and effective as promised by Microsoft, with the backup and restore process within everyone’s reach.

This new version of Windows 11 brings its share of novelties, among them, New File System (ReFS) support, revised emoji in form And some technical and cosmetic improvements.
