A mysterious Ukrainian cargo plane has crashed in Greece, the circumstances surrounding the drama are unclear
Eight people were on board during the crash on Saturday evening, July 16. The pilot had requested an emergency landing.
A cargo plane with eight people on board crashed, this evening, Saturday, July 16, near the city of Kavala, northern Greece, said firefighters and the official TV channel ERT.
The plane, an Antonov An-12 belonging to a Ukrainian airline, was bound for Jordan from Serbia, according to ERT.
Signal loss before explosion
The pilot had requested an emergency landing due to an engine problem before the plane lost its signal.
A video clip shows the burning plane rapidly losing altitude before crashing in what appears to be an explosion.
Firefighters were unable to confirm the type of plane that crashed, but added that initial reports said eight people were on board.

It was not immediately known the nature of the cargo that was transported on the plane.
“We are treating the shipment as dangerous,” a fire official said.
However, according to a statement issued by Serbian Defense Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, on Sunday 17 July, the plane was carrying around 11 tons of weapons, including flares mortar mines, reportedly bound for Bangladesh. Le Figaro.
