The British House of Commons voted on Wednesday in favor of the text, which must now be approved by the House of Lords.

British MPs adopted the controversial bill on the expulsion of migrants to Rwanda on Wednesday evening, January 17, a political victory for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who overcame an attempted rebellion within his majority. During this second vote in the House of Commons, 320 MPs voted for the text and 276 voted against it, sending it to the House of Lords for adoption or not.

After resignations within the Conservative Party and heated discussions in the parliamentary committee to try to tighten the text, dissidents lined up behind Rishi Sunak, who promised to prevent migrant boats from crossing the Channel illegally. This major Boris Johnson project was announced in April 2022, and has not yet been implemented. This new version aims to respond to the objections of the British Supreme Court, which deemed the project illegal out of fear for the safety of migrants who were sent to Rwanda.
