Central Italy was struck by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake

Schools were closed in some areas as a precaution, and trains were delayed until the railway lines were inspected.

The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) announced an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located near the town of Maradi, with a population of about 3,000 people, in the province of Florence, in the Apennine mountain range.

The earthquake occurred at 5:10 am local time (03:10 GMT).

On the social network X (formerly Twitter), firefighters explained that frightened residents called emergency services, but“No injuries have been reported at this time.”.

“A lot of anxiety”

Maradi Mayor Tommaso Triberti told Ranews24 TV that firefighters were carrying out searches inside homes.

“There is a lot of concern, all the people on the streets, but no specific damage has been reported.”He explained.

In 2019, the nearby town of Mugello was hit by a 4.5-magnitude earthquake, causing minor damage but cracking the facade of a 17th-century church.
Mugello had already been hit by a devastating earthquake in 1919, one of the worst of the century, killing about a hundred people.

The Central Apennines have a high risk of seismic activity.
