“Incomprehensible”… Slaughtering of an endangered bear and outrage in the country
Cruel gesture. a Brown bear In danger of extinction. Shot by a man near San Benedetto dei Marsi, in Abruzzo (central Italy), a gesture condemned on Friday by animal rights activists.
Amarena, who is often photographed this summer walking with her cubs, was one of the most popular brown bears in Abruzzo National Park. She was shot and killed by a 56-year-old man who was quickly identified and said he found her on his property outside the national park, according to police.
“Nothing justifies” her being shot
Amarena “did not cause any problems for people at all” and “there was no justification” for shooting her, according to Abruzzo National Park officials. The animal was one of 60 brown bears in the national park, and its two cubs, which now have no mother, are being actively sought.
The president of the Abruzzo region, Marco Marsilio, said it was “incomprehensible” that we could slaughter such an animal that poses no danger.
The Martian brown bear, native to central Italy, is a subspecies of the brown bear Critically endangered.
In a press statement, the non-governmental organization denounced the killing of Amarena as “a severe blow that reduces the chances of survival of these bears.” Global Fund (WWF) Italy. The WWF said it was considering civil action against the perpetrator.
