Tricolor cycling hopeful Romain Gregoire (Groupama-FDJ) opened his pro roster by winning stage two of the Four Days Dunkirk on Wednesday, which tied Compiègne (Wise) and Lune (Aisne), ahead of Breton’s Ethan Vernon (Soudal- Quick Step) and France’s Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën Team).

The puncher, holed up for a long time, gave his effort at the final corner of an uphill finish (1.9km at 4.1%), widening a gap no one else could fill. It was another Frenchman, Samuel Leroux (Van Rissel-Roubaix Lille Métropole), who took the leader’s pink jersey thanks to bonuses.

Belgian Ceriel Desal (Bingoal WB), Canadian Pier-André Coté (Human Health) and New Zealander Logan Currie (Bolton Equities Black Spoke), the last survivors of the morning breakaway featuring Leroux, started the climb in the last ten seconds ahead of the peloton.

They were joined by France’s Victor Lafay (Cofidis) in the final kilometre, and were swallowed up 200 meters from the line despite Currie’s hard work.

On Thursday, the third stage, a 15.9km around Saint-Quentin (Aisne) for which French champion Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) will be the favourite, should adjust in depth the general classification.
