No truce in sight on the fifth day of heavy fighting

With our correspondent in Khartoum, Elliot Brache

On the fifth day of the fighting, the exchange of fire and explosions did not stop. The city shook all night. At 6:00 pm on Tuesday, the agreed date for the start of the truce, clashes were still taking place in the four corners of the capital.

Both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire. Neither Al-Burhan nor Hemedti seem to respect the commitments they made to the international councils, which constantly call for de-escalation. Today, Wednesday morning, major strikes took place in the city center and the vicinity of the presidential palace and the leadership of the armed forces. A thick cloud of smoke obscured the hose.

out of control situation

Civilians, they did not find sleep. L’objectif de la treve, qui n’a pas eu lieu, était de leur permettre d’evacuer les zones de guerre, faire des provisions, transporter les blessings dans les hôpitaux ou enterrer dignement leurs morts, car des cadavres jonchent les rues de City.

This morning small groups of people are heading south from Khartoum with some of their belongings hastily packed into plastic bags. Contrary to what the army has said in recent days, it is the RSF that has remained loyal to General Hemedti, which occupies and controls large parts of the capital. In residential areas, militiamen carried out arrests, looting, and abuses against civilians. The situation seems out of control.
