Google Drive adds a discretionary storage limit, even for those who pay
This 5 million limit only applies to files uploaded (or created) and not files shared with other users. According to Google spokesperson Ross Richenderfer, who interviewed him Ars Technica, This change is a way to “maintain high performance and reliability” of the service. It will also prevent “misuse” of the company’s system. If the user reaches the limit, a notification will be sent to them and they will need to contact Google Support to resolve the issue.

If the limit of 5 million files sounds huge for a single user, some have actually reached that limit. This is also how information began to circulate on the Reddit platform. A Google Drive user with 7 million files claimed in February that he couldn’t create new files even though he hadn’t reached the 2TB storage limit he was paying for. Others have reported the same problem, thinking it was a bug. Overnight, they find themselves unable to add new files, unless they delete others.
