The city of Sydney, Australia, has proudly reclaimed its title “The capital of the world on New Year’s Eve.” A gigantic fireworks display, with nearly 100,000 pyrotechnic devices, is launched from the port. More than a million people were expected to attend, while the authorities estimated the number of people watching the program on the Internet or on television at about half a billion.
Some islands in the Pacific Ocean, such as the Kerimati atoll or the Samoa Islands, also celebrated the transition to the new year that awaits us French people. If the fireworks are less brilliant than in Australia or New Zealand, the heavenly setting for the festivities will not pale in comparison to those in the big cities.
After Oceania, it will be Asia’s turn to enter 2023, starting with Japan and South Korea.
