Tuesday Scientific Conference: Giant Meteor Craters on Earth

Free general conference in Orleans.

Meteorites fascinate because of their extraterrestrial origin! Their craters, generated from playing cosmic pool above our heads, are even more mysterious, if in large part because of one of these collisions we could be out there this evening. From the smallest to the largest, from the most distant to the closest, we will travel the world to better understand how to detect the impact crater of a meteorite. Indiana Jones-like investigations with the touch of Sherlock Holmes. Ludovic Ferrier will present us with his latest discovery, “He Still Smokes”. He will talk to us privately about the expeditions to the depths of Africa and in particular his recent trip to Gabon that led him to prison in the Congo…

Ludovic Ferrier, originally from Loir-et-Cher, is a geologist and curator of the prestigious collection of meteorites at the Natural History Museum in Vienna (Austria). He is also the curator of the Impact Collection, which is his specialty, knowing that he has confirmed the meteorite origin of five of the 200 meteorite craters known to date on Earth. After studying at the University of Tours, Université Laval (in Quebec), the University of Nantes, and the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna (Austria) in 2009 before returning to Canada, London, for his post-doctoral studies. Since 2011 he resides in Vienna. He is the author and co-author of more than 106 scientific articles published in international journals, more than 200 abstracts presented at international conferences and also a book on meteorites.
