North Korea has been engaged in a series of tests for several months, while negotiations with the international community over its nuclear program have stalled. In early September, the North Korean regime also adopted a new doctrine declaring that the country would never give up nuclear weapons.
The projectile fired on Sunday traveled about 600 kilometers at a maximum altitude of 60 kilometers and at a speed of Mach 5 (about 6,000 kilometers per hour), according to the South Korean military. The Japanese Coast Guard issued a warning to ships in the area where the missile landed.
