Meteorologists said, today, Monday, that a limit of 0 degrees Celsius was recorded at an altitude much higher than the highest Swiss mountain.

Between Sunday and Monday, the temperature reached zero and even exceeded 5,000 metres. The Federal Meteorological Office said in a tweet, that a record was measured at an altitude of 5,184 meters above sea level. The 0°C limit has not been measured at such a high altitude in Switzerland as during the night from Sunday to Monday.

The old record, 5177 metres, is dated July 20, 1995. It is very rare, even abnormal, that the 0°C limit exceeds 5000 metres.

The previous record was measured on July 20, 1995 at an altitude of 5,117 m. Meteorologists determine the zero-degree limit using weather balloons.
