Shadi El Nahas would have liked to do more in the under-100kg class at the Grand Prix in Zagreb, Croatia. The Ontarians were limited to two fights, accumulating records with one win and one loss.

Copper started the competition strongly with Ebon’s victory over Croatian Zlatko Komric. However, the 24-year-old’s working day ended in the next round when he was stunned by Hungarian Veg Zsombor.
Shady showed a great opening fight against the Croat. Then he met a young Hungarian with whom we had seen tremendous progress recently. Coach Antoine Valois-Fortier explained that Shady appeared to lack energy in the second half of the fight and Zsombour managed to save it.
This was the first coppersmith competition since the Seniors Championships in April where he won the gold medal.
“Maybe there was a little rust starting. It’s been a while since he’s been in the competition and I think he needs to get back to swinging things a bit. Valois Fortier added, confirming that Shady El Nahas’ preparations would be perfect for both worlds.
In the same copper class, Kyle Reyes was defeated in his first fight that day when he was opposed to Estonian Gregory Minasken.
“Kyle was a bit frustrated, the Estonian has a rather special style and I think he surprised Kyle. Minasken was able to take control very quickly by scoring an early point and was able to finish the job after that even though Kyle struggled really hard”, concluded the Canadian coach .
Two bronze medals in Winterthur
Ian Ryder (-100kg) and Coralie Goodbot (-78kg) both finished on the third stage of the podium at the Senior European Cup in Winterthur, Switzerland.
Ryder was fast in his first two matches of the day, defeating Kazakhstan’s Bigzat Chagatayev and New Zealand’s Jason Koster. These two victories allowed the Canadian to win his group.
In the semi-finals, Dutch eventual silver medalist Killian Bolthus defeated Ryder. Ryder did not give up and recovered during his battle for the bronze medal against Italian Andres Felipe Moreno after a marathon duel that lasted more than 9 minutes.
For her part, Coralie Goodbot faced adversity from the start of the day losing to New Zealander and bronze medalist Moira de Villiers.
Goodbot did not miss her second chance at replay, as Eppon beat Austrian Marlene Hunger. Then, in the Bronze Final, Quebec scored two quick goals against Frenchman Le Anne Prostel to move up to the third division of the podium.
In a match weighing -90 kg in Winterthur, Alexander Arencipia was defeated from the start by the German Richard Fiedler.

British Columbian Nikola Petrovic scored Canada’s best result at the Junior European Cup in Bac, Hungary, where he finished bronze around his neck in the under-100kg category.
Petrovich quickly won his first two matches to emerge victorious from his group, but was defeated by Frenchman Kenny Leviz in the semi-finals. In the bronze medal battle, Petrovich needed only 23 seconds to win, ahead of Georgian Erikli Bazirishvili.
Evelyn Peyton (-52kg) also had a good day, finishing fifth. After three convincing wins early in the day, Peyton lost in the semifinals to gold medalist Rebecca Keeler of Hungary. She was then defeated by German Nicole Stakhov for the bronze medal.
