Brazil celebrates World Astronomy Day
World Astronomy Day is celebrated on Friday (8), the day that marks the important launch of the first special mission to the International Space Station (ISS). However, this only happens in Brazil, where in other parts of the world this date is celebrated on May 10.
Although there is no document that formalizes or justifies the choice of these dates, the truth is that any occasion is appropriate to talk about the universe and celebrate the great discoveries and the increasing achievements of science in this field.
It is important to note that the term ‘international day’ differs from the term ‘international day’, which is a term used for days that are celebrated in two or more countries.
In fact, there is World Astronomy Day, which is celebrated around the world twice a year, in the spring and fall. These are moving dates, set by the lunar calendar, and in 2022 will be May 7 and October 1, when astronomy societies, planetariums, museums, and observatories will promote public observation sessions, presentations, workshops, and other activities to educate the public about astronomy and our wonderful universe.
This date appeared in 1973 in the United States, with the aim of creating interaction between the general public and professional astronomers.
Here in Brazil, an important event that takes place on Friday, for example, is the opening of new equipment at the Open Museum of Astronomy (MAAS), also marking the birth of the great astronomer Jean Nicolini, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on Saturday. … (9) if he is alive.
There are also other memorial dates related to astronomy in Brazil. Cosmonauts’ Day is celebrated on January 9, in honor of the centenary of the mission, which was carried out by the Brazilian Space Agency (EAB) in 2006. The mission was the origin of the flight of the first Brazilian astronaut – Minister of Science and Technology and former Minister of Foreign Cooperation. Marcos Pontes – to the International Space Station.
We also celebrate, on September 2, Astronomers’ Day. This date was chosen in honor of the birth of Dom Pedro II, an astronomy enthusiast who is considered an amateur astronomer and patron of astronomy in Brazil.
