Earthquake hits Milan

We learned from the emergency services that an earthquake rocked the city of Milan in northern Italy on Saturday, and a number of residents rushed to the streets, with no injuries or damage reported immediately.

The shock, measured 4.4 by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), was felt throughout Lombardy, a region whose capital is Milan, but firefighters indicated they had received no call for help.

The epicenter of the earthquake was reported in the town of Bonnet Soto near Bergamo, and the city’s mayor, Carlo Previtali, told reporters that “There is no particular panic or anxiety.” among the local population.

Residents complained on Twitter that they had experienced an earthquake after already experiencing a fourth wave of the coronavirus. Lombardy was hit hard by the virus at the start of the pandemic last year.

Earthquakes are common in Italy, and most are minor and cause only minor damage. The last major earthquake to date, with a magnitude of 5.3, killed 34 people in 2017 in the center of the country.
