With this joint declaration – which reads a note from Farnesina – which will be included in the official documents of the 48th session of the Human Rights Council, the signatories express their deep concern at reports of massive violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Afghanistan and condemn any violent act that threatens to undermine political, economic and social achievements the Afghan people over the past two decades.

Particular concern is expressed for all people who find themselves in situations of greater vulnerability and at high risk, starting with women and girls, whose rights to education, work and freedom of movement and expression, children, human rights defenders and human rights defenders must be upheld. Community leaders, journalists, and people belonging to religious and ethnic minorities, and gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex persons. Noting that Afghanistan is committed to many international conventions to protect human rights, as well as to the International Criminal Court, the signatories call on the de facto Afghan authorities to respect human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as ensure justice for all. violations. Thus, the need for the Human Rights Council to establish an independent mechanism to monitor the human rights situation in the country was emphasized, a demand urged by civil society. In line with this initiative, Italy will continue to pay maximum attention to developments in the country and make its own contribution to the work of the international community to support full respect for humanitarian law and human rights in the country.
