Climate protesters sounded the alarm again in Brussels

(Belga) – On Sunday, dozens of people demonstrated at the crossroads of Europe, in front of Brussels Central Station, to warn of extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and more violent due to climate change. The demonstrators also wanted to express their support for the many victims of the mid-July floods in Belgium.

Climate scientist Jean-Pascal van Ypersel took the floor to assess the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the challenges facing the upcoming United Nations climate conference, scheduled for Glasgow in early November (COP26). For the Belgian climatologist, the science is clear and shows that the goals of the Paris Agreement (among them, limiting warming to less than 2°C and, if possible, to 1.5°C) must be respected. He stressed that solidarity is necessary, among other things, between the countries of the North and the South. Many of the people who came to help flood victims, particularly in Verviers, also testified to the suffering they had witnessed in recent weeks. A minute’s silence was observed in memory of the victims of these unheard-of weather conditions. The demonstrators, gathered by “Rise For Climate Belgium”, once again emphasized the urgency of the situation. They are asking political leaders, especially those who will be present in Glasgow for COP26, to take strong measures as soon as possible. (Belga)
