Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) is the new leader of the Vuelta at the end of the sixth stage. The Slovenian finished second in Cullera behind Dane Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF), the survivor of today’s breakaway.

The peloton took over the group of five separatists before the final steep, 2km climb at La Cullera near Valencia. Kurt Nielsen, who started before anyone else, crossed the finish line first, ahead of Roglic. Thus, the Slovenian regained the red shirt three days after losing it.

Roglic was the only one of the group of candidates standing against the Dane on the final climb: Enrique Mas came in by four seconds, Michael Matthews gave up by six, and Egan Bernal arrived in eight seconds.

Among the contenders for the final win, Adam Yates again lost time, finishing the stage 25 seconds behind Kurt Nielsen and Roglic, ahead of Mikel Landa (27).

Overall, Roglic, a favorite for the Triathlon after his successes in 2019 and 2020, now has 25 seconds ahead of Mass, his first pursuit. All other favorites are between a half and a minute and a half late: Yates is 11, at 1’22.

On Friday, the Vuelta contests its first big mountain stage with six passes listed, two of which are Category I: the Llacuna Pass, at the start of the stage, and a finish at the top of the Balcon de Alicante (8.4km to 6,2% rate).
